One of the Mashpiim in the Lubavitcher Yeshiva in Russia, Reb Yechezkel Feigen, once had a Farbrengen with his students.
At the Farbrengen, he demanded a lot of his students. He old them that he wanted to see a deeper commitment to Yiddishkeit. His students were so moved that they began to cry. ..
Suddenly, in middle, the person who was the watchman ran in saying that the KGB was coming. All of a sudden everyone started making suggestions was to do. One said, they should run away, another said they should close the lights and let the darkness hide them. A third suggestion was to pull out newspapers on the table to show that they were involved in 'kosher' activities.
Baruch Hashem, the KGB never came, and they were able to continue their Farbrengen. Rabbi Feigen turned to his students and told them, "I just saw something very strange. I hope you can explain it to me. Tell me, what affects you more, a difficulty in Gashmius or ruchnius?" The students were honest with themselves and answered that it was Gashmius that affected them more.
He then proceeded to ask them why when he spoke to them about their spiritual well bein, everyone was crying, but when they heard that the KGB was in the area and their lives were in danger, nobody cried.
One of the students said: " what would sitting and crying do for us? We had to figure out a way to save ourselves."
R. Feigen had been waiting for such an anwer. "oh, I see. When you had to act fast, you knew that crying woul dnot help. Why, then, when it comes to spiritual things is it acceptable to cry?"
When were just upset about our Ruchnius state, that doesn't really help us. We need to DO something about it and CHANGE the situation. If were really serious about change, there is no time to cry...
